The budget allocated to Vickers for production of the A11 infantry tank Mk I called for a maximum price of £6,000, which restricted the designers to producing a two-man tank. It was designed by Sir John Carden at Vickers-Armstrongs in 1934/35. (Warehouse Collection)

Early trials showed that the Matilda had a tendency to throw tracks and this was resolved on production machines by relocating the track-return rollers on the sides of the hull. Changes were also made to the layout of the nose. A small number of Matildas went to France in 1940, but were mostly confined to training. (Warehouse Collection)
